Well that was welcomed mr TOTP2 producer now can we pleeze lose Steve Wright and the bleedin stupid captions, oh and a decent researcher who'll know the correct tx dates.

ONLY partially satisfied as I know there are hundreds of classic BBC TV pop performances in the BBC ARCHIVES, let's see them.

BBC reverse their stupid decision not to screen the traditional Christmas Day edition of TOTP.

BBC Press Office:

The BBC announced today that Top Of The Pops will be returning to BBC One this Christmas with two special, one-off shows – one on Christmas Day and one on New Year's Eve.

The Top Of The Pops Christmas Special is an hour-long celebration of all things pop.

Filmed in BBC Television Centre, it will feature exclusive performances from some of the year's biggest stars and will count down the chart to the all important Christmas number one.

The Top Of The Pops New Year's Eve Special is a brand new show that will review the year in pop.

This hour-long special marks the first time BBC One has shown a New Year's Eve edition of Top Of The Pops.

Jay Hunt, Controller, BBC One, said: "With shows on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, Top Of The Pops has never been bigger.

"The shows will form the centrepiece of a massive musical offering during the festive season that we hope viewers are really going to enjoy."

Notes to Editors

The Christmas and New Year's Eve specials are one off programmes. There are no plans to bring back TOTP full-time.

This hour-long special marks the first time BBC One has shown a New Year's Eve edition of Top Of The Pops.

Oh yes it has, anybody who knows anything about British Television knows that.

What made them change their minds? Was it Simon Cowell and his music industry cronies and money, was it the government or was the sheer amount of complaints they got from the music fans?

Was this news leaked to the Times last week? Maybe that's where the rumour that the programme will be making a comeback in 2009 came from, a rumour hotly denied by BBC.

The BBC has rubbished reports that it is set to bring back Top Of the Pops next year.

A report in The Times today says that the iconic programme “is expected to return to BBC television in the next year”, quoting music industry sources.

However, the BBC says, "Despite continuing speculation, there are currently no plans to bring back a weekly Top of the Pops programme on BBC television."

So can anybody tell me who is No 1 I aint known who's been at the "top of the pop" charts since July 2006 when TOTP was axed.

But after heavy lobbying from artists, managers and record companies, Top of the Pops is expected to return to BBC television in the next year amid claims that there is not enough popular music on television.

Nothing mentioned about the music fans and TV Licence payers though who lobbied for it's return.

If It's true then it's made a quicker comeback than Doctor Who.

All it needs now is an experienced producer and some decent chart music.

NO XMAS TOP OF THE POPS

For the first time since 1964 there will be NO Xmas special of TOTP this year, not that I'm bothered it died a death in the early 80's for me. And to cap the announcement it's Snowing across the UK too, It's not gonna be Xmas without TOTP, a bit like it can't be xmas without a bit of Slade.

Instead the BBC in their wisdom choose to dust off TOTP2 for the first time in 12 months which will feature, funnily enough some of the years no 1's on video, along with the same Xmas archive footage that has been seen a million times before.

Surely this smacks as double standards by the BBC who blamed the programmes demise on the 24 hr music channels showing the same regurgitated videos hr after hr.

Just goes to show how much contempt the BBC have for music fans AND TV Licence payers of this country.

The French equivelent of TOTP2 is being broadcast on Arte which features BBC TOTP Archive performances NEVER seen on TOTP2 or any other BBC programme.

WHY???????????

When BBC producers of TOTP2 REFUSE to show you these amazing performances, instead you get the usual clips time & time again and there's NO stupid comments or stupid captions either.

BBC THIS is how to present this footage, no wonder TOTP2 died on it's arse.

SHOW US, THE LICENCE PAYER, THESE GEMS, never mind foreign TV FIRST.

Yes BBC WW was supposed to be looking into it but selling the programme abroad first shows just what contempt BBC has for music fans in BRITAIN.

BBC Worldwide today announced the opening of a wholly owned production office in Paris, France.

BBC Worldwide Productions France will work alongside BBC Worldwide's Sales & Distribution team in France, managed by Tim Muff, which continues to oversee all of the company's programme distribution, publishing and licensing activity in France.

BBC Worldwide has a history of licensing British formats in France, including The Weakest Link, Top of the Pops, Great French and The Office.

The Paris production office is BBC Worldwide's latest in a growing network of production bases, the others being in Los Angeles, New York, Mumbai, Toronto and Sydney.

We the undersigned ask: that all music artists, bands, their Record Companies/ Management and TV Companies BBC, ITV and also the BFI work together, to legitimately, let the music fans of a particular artist/ band, have access to, or officially release, the incredible performances held in their archives.

And the 46-year-old rocker is not only demanding the poptastic show be saved, but that the BBC opens it archive of thousands of TOTP performances, from his beloved Slade, the Beatles and the Stones.

There are thousands of sensational performances held in the archives that have not been seen for years. There is no reason why the BBC cannot put them on the internet. After all we have all paid for it through the licence fee," he said.

BBC Four would be great if it was used for more archive showings, especially Top of the Pops, as in TOTP Red Nose Day on BBC Four. With over 1,100 listings in the BBC archive for TOTP why not re-show the full editions you have just like UK Gold did in the 1990s?

Well sort of:

15 Months after they axed the worlds longest pop show on TV (Top Of The Pops) blaming the demise on falling audiences, internet downloads, 24 hour Satellite & Cable Music channels and the rest of the bollox they came out with BBC decide the time is now right for a replacement. Why when nothing has changed? there's more music channels, more people watching music videos on Youtube, more people downloading music to their ipods, burning to cd's etc etc.

TEATIME on a Saturday afternoon, where's the audience? at the game with Mom & Dad, uptown shopping or out with their mates.

Sound is a new, weekly music TV show co-hosted by BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac and new BBC signing Nick Grimshaw. The show focuses on the best UK music and, with no studio base, it is filmed at outside locations across the UK. Sound is a fast-paced programme showcasing the most exciting new music, as well as the hottest established artists from the UK and overseas. The show mixes up live performances and interviews across a variety of genres and styles, focusing on the world of teens. Artists for the first show are still under wraps.

SO WHY AXE TOTP 15 MONTHS AGO ???

Teens eh??? how many viewers??? outside locations???

Wonder how long this will survive the mass job losses @ BBC????

Dear Sirs, as you are quite aware, I have, over a number of months, even before the announcement that it was returning, been complaining about the musical content of TOTP2.

Despite complaining I always get the same response from different people at BBC Information.

The problem TOTP2 has, is, that the same footage that has been shown before, is still being used, upto date (since TOTP2 returned on 30/09/06) there has only been one performance that has never been seen before, can you please explain, why?

Despite this situation being aired on "Points of view" where one of the producers states "We are looking into the possibility of using the archive better" there is nothing new coming from the archive, that has never been seen before, even though it does exist.

The BBC Editorial Guidelines states " To help BBC content producers, whether in-house or Independent, public service or commercial, to navigate their way through difficult editorial issues and produce distinctive and sometimes controversial programmes and other material to the highest ethical and editorial standards.

The BBC in allowing these guidelines not to followed on TOTP2, is not providing value for money, by not producing distinctive programming or using material to the highest ethical and editorial standards.

It could be the fact, that, as these performances had already been "rights cleared" years ago and can therefore be used a number of times, instead of using the unseen, since first tx footage, that IS in the Archive.

What utter BOLLOCKS

I have never seen such a fucking utter diabolical retro programme in all my life, if this was the radio there would be complaints coming from all quarters.

The producers and researchers have done a fantastic job have'nt they? in killing, what could have been the most watched retro programme in the history of BBC.

ONLY 1 UNSEEN performance since first transmission screened on TOTP2 in 5 weeks (Cockney Rebel Mr Soft from the recently discovered MIS-FILED 15/8/74 edition of TOTP) and the reply was "we are looking into the possibility of USING the archives BETTER!!!!

Who do the BBC think they are FFS MI bleedin 5 (Spooks)if they (BBC)think they can fob off the public with lame excuses and the same excuses (just like the same footage on TOTP2)all the time then think again BBC.

I AM prepared to go to court over this and take "direct action" by organising a demonstration outside EVERY BBC local TV broadcasting building in the UK.

BBC were warned over 2.5 Months ago that I will not be silenced, I know the score, and I speak as the collective.

Here is a plea to the BBC regarding the future of TOTP2 and the BBC Archives.

Today on Points Of View with Wogan, Mark Cooper one of the producers of TOTP2 says "We are looking into using the archive better"

This should have happend BEFORE the series began, with 3 shows already in the can, they should have worked out what footage to use at the weekly production meetings and not rely on previous TOTP2 shows, the running order and even Wrighty's sarcastic comments are the same that was used on TOTP2 from 2003 (cheers Leechy)

Here are just a few of the messages for BBC I have been leaving on the POV message Board over the last few months, I know readers of this blog will agree 100%

TOTP has not been axed because of the 24 hour music channels the programme should never had been moved from a Thursday to a Friday then to a Sunday on BBC2
As it is (or was) a chart based show it's the music, you lot buy it and get it into the charts so you only have yourselves to blame.

24 hour music channels have been with us since 1989 17 years ago and in that time only ONE TOTP DVD has been released by BBC and that featured the same recycled clips that had been seen time and time again there is a wealth of UNSEEN performances by the worlds greatest bands and artists why can't we see them?

It's not about TOTP it's the fact that NOBODY at the BBC can be bothered to look for the better archive footage that DOES exist for the TOTP swansong tomorrow night.

A diabolical way to end the longest running tv music programme in the world which in it's heyday was the envy of the world, other Tv stations the world over tried to emulate it, but unlike the BBC's foolhardy decision in the mid 70's to wipe/junk the tapes the others (particually Germany)kept theirs, including ZDF's DISCO programme which features loads of now wiped TOTP performances from 1971-1973.

Other complete editions of TOTP and numerous performances exist elsewhere why the BBC could not be arsed to track em down (it's quite easy)for this last show and show the UK public who paid for this footage to be made is beyond me, there are some brilliant performances. WILL they be shown to you IF and WHEN TOTP2 comes back? NO

I had an idea earlier this year for a new TOTP2.

This new archive programme would not only feature TOTP archive material but performances from the light entertainment programmes as well as kids programmes.

And also featuring the amazing archive material held by ITV and the BFI.

And also the amazing footage held in European Broadcasters archives (which is in better condition than ours)

There are hundreds of people who I have polled for something like this.

I have been involved with TV pop archive footage requests for years now, I started in 1989 asking BBC to repeat the shows some success I had was the video releases for the 25th anniversary of TOTP boxpops sounds of the 60's 70's & 80's and the UK gold reruns and eventually TOTP2, but there is a load of footage still held that has never been seen or released.

A sustained campaign for the BBC to show old music performances (NOT just TOTP Archive)and/or put a new Channel BBC music in place or combined with BBC3 & 4 is about to be launched.

Now that TOTP is no longer there is NO music programming whatsoever on BBC at the moment.

The BBC have enough music material in their archives to sustain a 24hr music channel of their own.

They blame the likes of MTV Vh1 and the rest for the demise of TOTP so if you can't beat 'em join 'em.

BBC you have but only one chance to appease the fans please get it right this time, please show the complete performance with no overlaid grapics and no talking over the track by the presenter, will you be showing the unseen since first transmission performances/ promo videos made especially for TOTP that remain in the archive? you know where they are can you start to use them.

Next weeks is just as bad.

Come on BBC get it together and SHOW US THE PERFORMANCES YOU KNOW ARE IN THE ARCHIVES THAT REMAIN UNSEEN SINCE FIRST TX.

Things can only get worse as next weeks show proves, Living on the ceilling, Always look on the bright side, of the BBC, hardly, this just proves how much little thought has gone into the production & the content of this archive show, but what do you expect from the same team who bought us the farcicle TOTP the final countdown in July.

Saturday's return of TOTP2 was just as bad as the TOTP the final countdown broadcast 30th July 2006.

Same old tired clips AGAIN so predictable BBC I mean, come on, Frankie's Relax from the 20th birthday show in 1984 as been seen 10 times already on TOTP2 and umpteen times before on other archive programmes.

Rarely seen FGTH Relax from the Xmas 1984 show (they always show the 20th birthday one)

Now I know the BBC have some fantastic promo video's especially made for TOTP in the late 60's- mid 70's still in the archive and they showed the Beach Boys Sloop John B promo, however this is not a TOTP promo.

Refreshed and reinvigorated after a long lie-down, TOTP2 returns with a new look and all the best bits intact.

HARDLY!!!!
Same old stuff, same presenter, same presentation same everything really, you have to question the TOTP2 producers sincerity and integrity to produce SOMETHING WORTH WATCHING.

At it's height TOTP2 was the highest rating programme on BBC2 if this diabolical treatment of the super performances (which remain UNSEEN SINCE FIRST TRANSMISSION) CONTINUES THEN BBC2's inept attempt CAN EXPECT LESS VIEWERS THAN NEWSNIGHT.

BBC BRINGS TOTP2 BACK TO OUR SCREENS

YIPPEE, This is the news we have been waiting for. BBC2 will be broadcasting the show as from 30th September 2006 8 weeks after the final show of the regular edition.

MY TOTP final countdown is therefore suspended pending the outcome of the first programme, if the same footage that has been used before on TOTP2 is used there will be an outcry and I WILL SHOW THE STUFF THE BBC WILL NOT SHOW.

TOTP2 is to return on BBC2 at the end of September. It will run in a Saturday teatime slot from September 30th right up to Christmas. The show will continue to mix vintage material from the TOTP archive with new studio performances for which studio time has already been booked. 12 performances will be recorded on 14th & 15th September with 2 performances on each show between 30th sept and 4th November with further recordings planned for late October. The team behind the new series is led by Mark Copper & Sally Wood.

In the winter of 1974 ITV's rival to TOTP "Lift Off With Ayshea" closed it's doors for the last time I guess because "This Town Aint Big Enough For Both Of Us"

So as music fans old and young all over the UK get ready to watch the final Top Of The Pops on Sunday 30th July 2006 I can reveal that there will be NO NEW UNSEEN FOOTAGE instead we will be treated to the same old boring clips (NOT THE FULL PERFORMANCES) seen hundreds of times in the past.

The show opens with VT of the Rolling Stones circa 1965 with "The last time" who opened the first show on 01/01/64 check the performance database put together by Laurence Piper HERE

The show then continues with a decade by decade look back, interspersed with filmed tributes from some of the artists (some piss artists as well at that) closing with the current No 1, with the chances of there being a new no 1 this Sunday 6 endings to the show have been filmed the No 1 will be announced at 19.00 hrs the time TOTP the final countdown will start so they will have to have all 6 endings ready to slot in 1 of them.

I had already decided NOT to watch or record for posterity this last ever UK TOTP as I knew they would be using the same clips, instead I have made my own tribute DVD (for my viewing only Mr Legal BBC) which I shall watch Sunday and I'll turn the lights off myself.

The BBC have treated music fans with contempt for years and this final show proves that.

TOTP was the best thing ever when I was 10 to 15. I am glad I was there then when it meant so much to everyone. call me old fashioned but no one will ever have that experience again, waiting to see who was no1. and when it was Slade we just when wild in front of the Tele. it was all we had and that made it so special, now Music is just a way of life, then it was a religion. every Thursday (Tuesday lunch for Top 20 on Radio in the sandwich room at school). As the audience queued to get into the final recording of Top of the Pops there was something of a buzz in the air.
As the crowd entered the studio, decorated with logos (as above) from the past 42 years of the BBC pop programme, the excitement only grew.

The question of the evening: Which bands would be appearing?

In the end, they were to be disappointed.

The last ever Top of the Pops will be constructed from archive performances, and on Wednesday the producers were merely recording the links between those clips.

"In 20 years time we can say 'I was there'," said one audience member as they left the studio to the strains of Queen's We Are The Champions.

"The whole atmosphere at the end was quite sad, because everyone realised that that was it," Mr Cooksley said.

"It was obviously the end of an era and it was just really, really sad to have that brought to a close."

Letting Top of the Pops go shows a massive lack of imagination to me. Instead of showing what appears to be pride in losing it, the BBC should be ashamed of themselves for not being able to apply lateral thinking to a flagship programme in order to make it relevant. A lost opportunity.

Filming of the last ever edition of seminal British music show TOP OF THE POPS descended into chaos last night (25JUL06), when half of the studio audience stormed out. Fans were furious to discover the show - which will air in the UK on Sunday (30JUL06) - includes no live acts and is made up of old clips of performances spanning Top Of The Pops' 42-year history. Halfway through the recording - in which clips of the SPICE GIRLS, MADONNA, BEYONCE KNOWLES and THE ROLLING STONES were shown - the studio was left almost empty. The show was hosted by veteran broadcaster SIR JIMMY SAVILLE - who presented the first ever Top Of The Pops in 1964 - and FEARNE COTTON.

Top Of The Pops Remains Rubbish To The Very End

Many a BBC Producer harks back to a 'golden age' in which people stood around the water cooler and asked each other "Hey - did you see Top Of The Pops last night?"

Neglecting to mention, of course, that the statement was invariably followed by "Wasn't it the biggest pile of sweaty old donkey bollocks you ever saw in your life?"

Top Of The Pops has finally keeled over and died. It went out, however, in characteristically cack-handed fashion.

To add insult to injury, the 'classic' video clips on display comprised of utter non-performers such as checkout-girls-got-lucky The Spice Girls and professional make-up saleswoman Beyonce

As news broke of the BBC's foolhardy decision to scrap Top Of The Pops the media picked up on the campaign, I have had e mails of support from all over and this will not be the only media attention the campaign will receive in the lead up to the final TOTP show on 30th July 2006.

There is no reason we the viewing public CAN NOT see some of the amazing musical performances held.

MAJOR CAMPAIGN AGAINST RECORD COMPANIES BANDS/ARTISTS

I am about to start a campaign for ALL "MAJOR" pop/rock bands/artists and TV companies to let the fans have the music archive holdings released to the fans who made them famous/ rich and paid for this stuff to be produced.

Hell we bought the records WHY can't we see the video? DON'T keep saying it's all to do with rights and licences and bullshit like that, the bands/artists as contributors own the rights to this stuff so it's upto the fans to pressure the bands/management.

EVERYBODY from ABBA to ZZTOP SHOULD have a full video anthology in their portfolio and where a video doesn't exist, for a record, make one, with images to the track, it's easily done.

Over the next few weeks and months I will be contacting every major tv company, record company and band web site and every newspaper in the UK to bring attention to this on going farcical attitude of the bands/artists of we've had your money now go away (putting it politely)

I am NOT an attention seeking pop fan I have a huge Vinyl collection (+ 8000 video's) and would love to see the video as well that's all, I am as passionate (IF NOT MORE SO AFTER THE SLADE THING see HERE) today to see this happen as I was 17 years ago when I started my campaign to get TOTP repeated.

Hi ya all, Hope you all had a great Xmas and hope you have a better new year, the promised Xmas downloads had to be cancelled has I had been ill over the xmas period.

I also wrote to UK Gold who had just started broadcasting on Satellite TV their reply is below and they duly replied with a 70's re-run of TOTP 110 shows in all and a few months after the 80's TOTP's were re-run.

4th download of the week comes from Status Quo with CAROLINE on that great German TV pop show Disco. As Rick Parfitt founder member of the mighty Quo is in hospital this week having tests, what better way to wish him all the best. Caroline entered the UK charts on 8th September 1973 the height of Glam Rock and reached no 5 which was their highest chart position so far.

This is The Quo performing the single on UK TV's Top Of The Pops 18th October 1973 which has been wiped, thankfully the performance on the previous weeks edition 11th October 1973 is in the BBC archive which has had a few showings on their now defunct archive show TOTP2, Slade also appeared on this show with My Friend Stan.

Well Christmas is coming and the Accountant is getting fat, coming up at the end of the week are some real Christmas Crackers on this blog and over on my Slade & Quo blog an "in depth" look at that all time Slade favourite "Merry Xmas Everybody"

2nd download of the week features our Glam sister, Suzi Quatro, performing her first major hit in Europe, CAN THE CAN on that great German TV show Disco, who's music archive is in a better state than most, including our own BBC's. This performance is from programme 32 1st broadcast on 25.08.1973

This image is Suzi performing the song on the UK programme Top Of The Pops on 1st June 1973 which was wiped, the only surviving performance she did of this track on TOTP is the Christmas day edition 1973. Highest UK chart position 1, entered the chart on 19/05/73 took 4 weeks to hit the top on 16/06/73.

1973 was a great year with Glam Rock at it's peak, it saw Slade Smash into the UK chart at no 1, no less than THREE TIMES.

Freda Payne with her only studio appearance, from the 70's with "Rock Me In The Cradle" 06/05/71. She never actually performed her no 1 hit "Band Of Gold" in the studio. The only surviving "Band Of Gold" is lying in the Granada Archive on the Roger Whittaker World of music shows, a series I have repeatedly tried to get re tx. Dig them flares.

This is Dandy Livingstone and "Suzanne Beware Of The Devil" 14/09/72 a great reggae tune at the height of the reggae scene of the early 70's.

Middle Of The Road with "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" from the Christmas day edition 1971. There were two "xmas" editions that year.

A tragic day for all Brummies, shortly after this edition was transmitted 21 people lost their lives at 20.10.

I have decided to move the top of the pops stuff from my other blog about slade which can be found here:

These Treasures from totp deserve a space of their own.

In 1988/9 the "Glam Rock" Video set of three was released. Seeing some of those performances again for the first time in years I realised the BBC MUST have every edition of TOTP, how wrong I was. I started a campaign through Record Collector magazine for a retro programme featuring ALL the archive material in the Vaults.

We ended up with a 35 minute programme called "Boxpops" although the programme featured "some" archive footage I was not satisfied. So I started up another campaign to either repeat the shows in full or release on video. I had some success with the two videos to commemorate the 25th year of TOTP, at last I was being listened to. The start of UK Gold in 1990 on satellite bought my vision even closer, I wrote to them requesting "OLD" editions of TOTP to be shown, they (UKG) duly obliged with a great package of about 110 1970's editions. I wrote back thanking them but also at the same time asking about the 80's, again they duly obliged. I had made a point to the BBC in the 70's/ early 80's not many of us had VCR's I also made that point to UKG.
Also many other "foreign" satellite channels had started up (notably German or Dutch) showing old editions of " Beat Club" Musikladen" Hits A GoGo Oldie Paraden (TOTP2) and DISCO. DISCO also had the advantage of having TOTP inserts "given" to them by the BBC when an artist/ band couldn't make it to Germany for the recording, MANY now "MISSING" from BBC

Since then we have been lavished with "Sounds Of The 60's 70's & 80's " a great series to which I congratulated producer David Jeffcock on. The BBC were a bit slow with my request for a retro programme, 4 years later we finally had TOTP2. But as we had now got most of this stuff now on tape in our own "little archive" through UKG and Sounds Of...... and various others TOTP2 was too late to satisfy my need to see the fab hits of my youth. TOTP2 was withdrawn from the schedules in 2004. Today TOTP is on BBC2 Sundays showing the same archive stuff as seen in the aforementioned shows.

Studio shots of 60's & 70's performances, most of these performances DO NOT exsist in the archives and are the only thing left of some of the most famous artists of the 60's & 70's. So it is my intention to let everybody see these and not just the chosen few, so here goes:

The Bee Gees perform New York Mining Disaster on 11th May, 1967 would have loved to have colour tv then.

This is a rare shot of The Who's lost performance of Pinball Wizzard from April 1969

T.Rex in action at the 1st rehearsal of Hot Love 8th April, 1971, notice the totp technicians in the background, do you know who they are?

The Sweet with Blockbuster from 18th Jan 1973 This performance is thought to exsist but I have never seen it.

The most sought after edition of TOTP it's the 500th show from 04/10/73 the only performance to survive is Dawn with Tie A Yellow Ribbon, which was transmitted on the Christmas day 1973 edition. Jimmy Savile, Tony Blackburn, Noel Edmonds, Kenny Everett presented the show, seen here, together with Pans people, I remember watching this as SLADE were on it.

Talking about Pans People here they are with a routine for The O'Jays Love Train from 15th March 1973 Yet again Slade were on this edition with Cum On Feel The Noize.

Mud on top of the pops 1974, this could be Tiger Feet has no info on the documentation for this performance other than 1974

This is Cozy Powell performing Dance With The Devil from the 17th January 1974. A great solo drum track, I prefer his other hit of '74 NA -NA-NA-NA.

Wizzard and See My Baby Jive from 18th May 1973. The only performance of this track to reside in the archive is the Christmas Day 1973 edition and was featured on the Glam Rock video.
